Advanced Agriculture - Animal Science:
In this academic camp for students ages 13-18, students will divide their day between learning about animal science and engaging in traditional recreation and skills. Although either of the two sessions offers an integrated stand-alone program, students are encouraged to enroll in both weeks so that they can cover the entire curriculum. Attending both weeks will also allow students to do projects that require more time, such as tanning a larger hide or glazing pottery.
Mornings will be focused on Animal Science topics. Afternoon choices will include such activities as archery, rappelling, nature hikes, ceramics, tanning, and blacksmithing.
The table below shows the California state standards that are being met and the hours of instruction for Sessions 1 and 2. The focus in the first week is on skeletal structure and digestion; the second week’s focus will be on reproduction and breeding. We will work with swine, goats, sheep, rabbits, horses and quail.
Instruction will include handouts, discussion, dissections, and actual production methods, including breeding, possible parturition, castration, possible surgeries, and butchering. These activities may be disturbing to some students. Students will not be required to participate in any activity with which they are uncomfortable.
